Visiting The Virgin Islands In June
In this article, we’ll go through exactly what travelers should know about visiting the Virgin Islands in June, from what the weather is like to what there is to do.
TL/DR: If you just wanted to know whether June is a good time to visit, the answer is yes, it’s considered one of the best times.
June Weather In The USVI
In June, the weather is fairly moderate, with temperatures beginning to warm up, ranging from 77-88 degrees Fahrenheit (25-31 degrees Celsius for travelers coming in from the EU / UK). While June is not the hottest month in the VI the temperature usually feels hot (and humid) to anyone who isn’t used to tropical weather, especially with the high relative humidity in the Caribbean, but there is often a nice sea breeze, especially near the coast that can make it seem cooler. It’s still important to hydrate throughout the day and recover from the direct sun with some naps in the shade, or a cool dip in the water.
Expect scattered showers to come through daily, which can also cool things off.
Water Temperature
The water is the perfect temperature for snorkeling in June
The water temperature in the Virgin Islands in June ranges from 80-83 degrees Fahrenheit (26-28 degrees Celsius), which feels almost as warm as bath water, which is usually 90-105 F°. For those snorkeling or engaged in medium to high intensity water activities, it can feel just like bath water, as the body warms up with exercise.
Low Hurricane Risk
Because June falls outside of hurricane season, it’s very unlikely that one will roll in and ruin your vacation.
Mosquitoes
Mosquito levels around St. John and St. Thomas are moderate to high in June. There has been news on 2025 dengue outbreaks in the Caribbean, but St. John has been spared in general, although precautions should always be taken.
Crowd Check
There are a moderate amount of tourists in the USVI in June, but it is not the most crowded month, which makes this a great month to visit. It feels quiet as the island prepares for the cultural festivities that happen in St. John late in June, and really get going at the beginning of the following month.
If you want to see for yourself what kinds of crowds there are in St. John, check out the live webcam below of the comings and goings at The Beach Bar.
Special Natural Occurrences
June is the peak of sea turtle nesting season. It’s such a special sighting that the local newspapers usually feature photos capturing the moment.
Travel Costs
Although both St. John and St. Thomas can be a bit crowded in June, there are still some good travel deals to be had this month, from cheaper flights to discounted hotels.
Smooth Seas For Sailing
June is the perfect time to charter a boat trip in the USVI because the seas are usually calm and perfect for sailing this time of year. June may be one of the best months to visit the USVI for seasick prone individuals who want to take advantage of optimal sailing conditions.
Events
The big event to catch when visiting the Virgin Islands in June is the St. John Festival, which takes place this year (2025) from June 28, 2025 – July 4.
In-Season Foods
Ocean to Table
For those interested in eating some fresh catch in St. John and St. Thomas USVI, the best local seasonal fish to eat around these islands in June are blue marlin and yellowfin tuna. You may also get lucky and find some mahi filet if you visit in early June, as their season is just ending then.
Book a Fishing Charter
Another option for obtaining some fresh line-caught seafood is to D.I.Y. with a dayboat catch adventure. We recommend booking a fishing charter with our friends at Just Fish. If you want to engage in sustainable fishing, you can always try your luck at spearing some of the invasive lionfish that can be caught in June or any month in the USVI.
Going Out To Eat Fresh Fish
When you visit restaurants make sure to ask about the wild caught options available in June. One of the best places to find fresh catch of the day is Morgan’s Mango, reservations required.
St. John Seafood Market
Calabash Market in Coral Bay (directions), on the east side, carries fresh fish and seafood. Make sure to go early (they open at 7am) because it all sells out fast.
Forest To Fork
Local fruits that can be found growing on St. John and St. Thomas include breadfruit and soursop. You might also be able to find some Tamarind which is in-season late spring and into the summer. As a hint on where to get started: there's a Tamarind Tree by the laundry mat in St. John. Shhh-don’t tell anyone. Locals mostly just suck on the fruit, which is sour with a hint of sweet. Because of the tartness, some people will make Tamarind stew or jams by boiling down the fruit and seeds, and adding sugar.
As a member of the pea family, tamarind comes as pods that contains the edible fruit.
The Best Caribbean Island To Visit In June
If we had to choose, St. John, USVI, is the best island to visit in the Caribbean in June (we’re a bit bias since we live here), because the seas are calm and our charter boat guests love that. Plus, it’s not too crowded, nor too hot. Not worrying about hurricanes is a huge plus. Fresh local fish and fruit abounds. June is one of those Goldilocks months to visit the Virgin Islands in general, but St. John is where we recommend visiting.
